Darling Dresses

2019
textiles

ADM End of Year Exhibition 2019, displayed at Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design and Media basement 1 lobby

Three handmade baby-toddler dresses were made from various surface and textile design methods learnt in class. The yellow dress has a frontal chest smocking detail, giving it the distinctive flower like patterns. The pink and white dress is screen-printed with thermochromatic ink, that changes from pink to white when heat is applied. The ruffle patterns on the sleeves are slowly created using crescent moon patterned satin stitch on the sewing machine. The blue dress patterns are created by tying and spraying bleach onto the dark blue cotton fabric to erode the dark blue dye. A clip-on pink brooch on the blue dress is created from thermoplastic method.

Other fashion accessories created are the scarves are created from various crochet methods. A little white and pink crochet bucket sling bag can house little trinkets or a water bottle. A pink elastic headband with a similar ruffle pattern to the white and pink thermochromatic dress complements the latter. A handcarry pouch is created from Devoré technique, and the leftover patterns from the burnout are painting in vibrant batik paints.

Other surface and textile design methods were explored and packaged in a picnic-snack theme. I imagined it as a picnic tea part of sorts where little girls wearing the dresses would sit under a large tree and play pretend. A Khong Guan biscuit tin with a handwritten post-it note from mummy houses many exploration and samples. An emptied out Beautex tissue box was repurposed to fit in pieces of fabrics that had transfer printing explorations. The fabrics were folded and placed into the tissue box in such a way that the viewer could pull the fabric out like tissue paper to examine the transfer printing samples. Plastic cups were filled with categorised surface and textile design method experiments. There were some experiments and explorations that unfortunately did not get packaged together within the theme, and were just displayed on the table.
